Special Enrollment Opportunity for Child Life Insurance
NRECA has negotiated a special enrollment window that begins August 1. Co-op employees can enroll eligible qualified dependent children in this product without submitting a statement of health form.
NRECA’s partner, MetLife, will provide a special enrollment window for the child life insurance product, which is part of the Group Term Life and AD&D Plan. This period opens on August 1 and is available through August 31, 2014. During this timeframe, employees may enroll eligible dependents without having to submit a statement of health form. Additionally, dependents previously denied coverage by MetLife may be able to secure coverage during this window. Going forward, the child life insurance product is being further enhanced to allow employees the ability to enroll eligible beneficiaries during qualifying events and during your co-op’s annual enrollment period without submitting a statement of health form. Please note that your employees must elect child life insurance coverage for each dependent they wish to have covered.
These enhancements do not increase cost to the Group Benefits Trust. Employees initiating coverage for the first time will incur a monthly premium of $1. Employees seeking to add dependents to their existing child life insurance policy may do so without incurring an increase in premiums.
Be sure to read the article regarding the Summary of Material Modifications that will need to be disseminated to employees at co-ops offering the Group Term Life and AD&D Plan.
Taking Advantage of the Special Enrollment Window
NRECA has identified co-op employees who may benefit from this enrollment window. A targeted letter will be sent via US mail to benefits administrators at those co-ops. Potentially-impacted employees will also be notified via mail of the enrollment opportunity. Employees wishing to take advantage of this special enrollment window will need to complete a “special child life enrollment form” and turn it in to their benefits administrator. Benefits administrators will then need to return a copy of the form to NRECA’s Employee Benefit Services team no later than August 31, 2014. Copies of the form will be included in the mailings to potentially-impacted employees and their benefits administrators.
Keep Your Employee Profiles Updated
The best way to ensure your employees are taking advantage of all benefit programs available to them, and their families, is to ensure their employee profiles are up-to-date and that information is passed to NRECA. Qualifying events such as a marriage, divorce or the addition of a child can open eligibility periods to employees and it is important that NRECA be aware of these events.
