Participants Get More from Their Benefits When They Use In-network Lab Services

Medical plan participants may need blood drawn, lab tests conducted or X-rays taken at either their doctor’s office or an outpatient facility. In either case, they save money and get the most out of their medical plan benefits when their lab work and X-rays, MRIs and CT scans are done at an in-network lab or imaging center.

The advantages of using an in-network lab or imaging center include:

  • Copayments and coinsurance that may be lower
  • Billing for only applicable copayments and coinsurance, as out-of-network labs and imaging centers may bill participants for the difference between their out-of-network benefit and the amount of charges for the services
  • Access to health management programs, which help participants and their doctors manage their specific health care needs

Labs in the UnitedHealthcare network include LabCorp, which has more than 2,500 locations nationwide, as well as other national, regional and local labs and imaging centers. Quest Diagnostics isn’t part of the network.

Participants can use Find a Doctor on the Employee Benefits website to locate an in-network lab or imaging center. If a lab isn’t in the online directory, they or their doctor can call 866.673.2299, option 1, to confirm whether the lab participates in the network.
