Zepbound Returns to the Prescription Drug Formulary on October 1, 2026
Zepbound will return to the NRECA Medical Plan’s prescription drug formulary as an additional preferred GLP-1 option for use with weight loss beginning October 1, 2026. This update will give your plan participants and their providers more flexibility to choose the medication that best meets their needs.
Last year, CVS Caremark® excluded Zepbound in favor of Wegovy as a part of its cost-management strategy. Since then, increased manufacturer competition, pricing pressure and strong demand from plan sponsors (including NRECA) for broader choice and access have shifted the economics of GLP-1 medications.
Because GLP-1 medications differ in active ingredients, dosing schedules and other clinical factors, participants cannot automatically switch from one drug therapy to another. Participants wishing to move to a different GLP-1 medication will need a new prescription from their provider and to complete the prior authorization process.
If participants have questions or need assistance, they can speak with a CVS Caremark Care representative at 888.796.7322.
