Focus on Nutrition in March
Is healthy eating easier said than done for you? If so, why not use March – National Nutrition Month – as the perfect reason to start incorporating some healthy eating habits into your day.
Remember, just focus on taking it one step at a time. Doing so makes it less daunting and more realistic to achieve healthy success.
- Switch up your proteins. Protein doesn’t just come from animals – and it’s important to include a variety of proteins in your diet. Beans, peas, tofu, unsalted nuts, chickpeas, and seeds are great sources of protein. They are naturally low in saturated fat and high in fiber. Eggs are also an excellent source of protein.
- Focus on fruits and vegetables. You’ve heard it before, but it’s worth stressing again: Fruits and vegetables are good for us, but most of us aren’t eating enough of them. Find ways to incorporate these vitamin-rich foods into your diet; simple ways include fruit and veggie kabobs, stir-fry and homemade fruit smoothies. And when the snacking urge hits, choose a banana, apple, grapes, or raisins instead of those vending machine temptations.
- Think before you drink. A healthy diet isn’t just about what you chew. Sodas, energy or coffee drinks, and other sweetened beverages are often loaded with sugar and offer little to no nutritional value. Instead, go for water, low-fat or fat-free milk, and 100 percent juice.
