Change in Process for RS Plan Suspension of Benefits Notification

As required by the U.S. Department of Labor, NRECA mails Suspension of Benefits Notices to participants in the Retirement Security (RS) Plan who are approaching their plan’s normal retirement date and are still actively employed.

The notices, which are mailed three months prior to the participant’s normal retirement date, explain how working past one’s normal retirement date can affect a pension benefit and how the quasi-retirement option works, if it is allowed by the co-op.

Beginning with the November 2021 mailing, notification that benefits administrators receive when an employee in their co-op is mailed a Suspension of Benefits Notice will be sent via Message Center through the NRECA Employee Benefits website rather than email.

Some participants, those who transferred between co-ops with different retirement dates, for example, or whose co-op changed its normal retirement date during the course of their career, may receive more than one notice. More information about situations when this might occur as well as the overall Suspension of Benefits Notice process is available in the BA Guide on NRECA’s Employee Benefits website.
