Reminder: BTA Insurance and Supplemental BTA overage options

Business travel accident (BTA) insurance provides an additional layer of insurance protection to cooperative employees while on authorized business travel. This protection is in addition to the NRECA group term life and accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D) insurance program.

A common exposure that most co-ops have is related to travel on aircraft. This travel can be for business meetings or also related to aerial photography or inspections. In some cases, a co-op may own, lease or charter aircraft and some may even have a pilot on staff. For these situations, it’s important to understand what exclusions exist.

The NRECA group term life plans have no exclusions, so there are no coverage restrictions associated with travel. The NRECA group term AD&D insurance plans cover losses as a result of travel on aircraft so long as the individual wasn’t acting in the capacity of a pilot, flight student or crew member.

The standard NRECA BTA plan excludes losses as a result of travel in an aircraft in the following situations:1

  • Aircraft which is owned, leased, controlled or chartered by the employer
  • Acting as a pilot, crew member flight student or while acting in any capacity other than as a passenger
  • For pipeline or powerline inspection
  • For aerial photography or exploration

Each of these exclusions under the BTA insurance plan can be removed for an additional premium under the supplemental BTA insurance plan (SBTA). A co-op must be enrolled in the standard BTA plan in order to have coverage for these situations listed above.

For more on BTA insurance and supplemental BTA insurance, review the Business Travel Accident page in the BA Guide.
