Form 5500 Extensions Filed; Distribute Summary Annual Reports in November

Summary Annual Reports (SARs) for the 401(k) Pension Plan and Group Benefits Program will be available for distribution in early November 2017. When the annual returns are filed, NRECA will post the SARs on the Employee Benefits website and will also publish an I&FS Weekly article with distribution instructions and deadlines.

SARs must be distributed within 60 days after the Form 5500 returns are filed. Since extensions were filed for both the 401(k) Plan and the Group Benefits Program, the Form 5500 returns will be filed after the regular due date, and the 60-day distribution period for the SARs will not begin until the after Form 5500 returns have been filed.

If you’ve loaded reminders from the 2017 Compliance Calendar into your calendar application, disregard the SAR distribution reminders for September 30, 2017.  The calendar includes a second set of reminders for the extended distribution deadline so that you can plan to distribute the SAR in late November. Remember, the SARs are only for the 401(k) Plan and Group Benefits Program. The annual funding notice for the Retirement Security Plan replaces the need to distribute a SAR for that plan.
