Ensure New Dependents Get Enrolled in Medical Coverage

Welcoming a new child into the family is an exciting but busy time. For NRECA Medical Plan participants, among the long list of things to do should be enrolling a newborn child as a dependent as soon as possible.

Here are key points to use when speaking with participants regarding coverage for newborns:

  • Under the NRECA Medical Plan, participants should report to the benefits administrator their intent to add a new child to their plan within 31 days after the birth of the child. Otherwise, claims for newborns not enrolled in coverage can be denied.
  • The child’s Social Security number is not required for enrollment; only the name, gender and date of birth are required. The child’s Social Security number can be reported to NRECA when it is available.
  • NRECA does not automatically add any child to coverage, even if the mother is already covered, the member has family coverage or if a claim is submitted on the child.

Your employees can find more helpful information related to maternity and newborn coverage in the new NRECA Maternity Benefit Resource Guide. The guide provides a summary of benefits, resources and tips, from finding a doctor to enrolling in the First Steps Maternity Program.

In addition to its availability on the NRECA Employees Benefits website, the guide will also be included in the welcome packet for new enrollees of the First Steps program.
