COVID-19 Antibody Testing Coverage

As cooperatives prepare to return to in-person operations amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, many are considering implementing regular testing for the virus of their employees, which may also include antibody tests.

As required by the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) and the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, the NRECA Medical Plan provides coverage for testing that is FDA-approved or subject to an FDA-authorized emergency use authorization that could lead to a COVID-19 diagnosis without a participant cost share obligation. Coverage and elimination of participant cost share also extend to COVID-19 antibody tests. However, the antibody test must be ordered by a medical professional. Home testing kits will not be covered by the NRECA Medical Plan.

For diagnostic and antibody tests as ordered by a medical professional that are covered by the NRECA Medical Plan, all claims should be submitted to the plan first. As a result, there should be no need to submit any reimbursement claims to a participant’s flexible spending account, health savings account or health reimbursement arrangement.

If you or your co-op’s employees have additional questions about coverage for COVID-19 diagnostic or antibody testing, please reach out to the Member Contact Center at 866.673.2299. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, 7 am to 7 pm, Central time.
